A legume from a plant that bears seeds in pods that grow underground. Peanuts often are thought of as a nut. The oval, ivory-colored seeds are covered with a papery skin and encased in a fragile, tan pod. Peanuts have a buttery, nutty flavor when roasted. They are the main ingredient of peanut butter.
